The function kidneys have is to get rid of the toxic substances in the organism through urine. They also participate in the excretion of water and mineral salts, the control of acidity in the blood as well as the production of hormones. When kidneys suffer from some chronic disease that takes to complete failure of their functions, it is known as chronic renal insufficiency. This can happen, for example, in patients with poorly controlled arterial hypertension, long term diabetes, chronic glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney, among other causes.
In this situation, the patient usually presents symptoms such as weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, swellings, pallor, breathlessness, anemia and alterations in the blood test (high levels of urea, creatinine, potassium, etc.) so, it’s necessary to replace the functions kidneys do by doing a renal transplant, or through dialysis. Dialysis has the following kinds:
Hemodialysis promotes the removal of toxic substances, water and mineral salts from the organism by having the passage of blood through a filter. To make blood go through the device, it is necessary the setting of a catheter or the making of a fistula which is a procedure done in the arm veins more frequently, so that they can have a larger inner diameter and in this way giving the appropriate flow of blood to be filtered.
In the Peritoneal Dialysis, the peritoneum is used, this is a membrane located inside the abdomen and that covers the inner organs. Through the setting of a flexible catheter in the abdomen, it is done the infusion of a liquid similar to a serum in the abdominal cavity. This liquid that we call dialysis bath, gets in contact with the Peritoneum and through it, the removal of toxic substances in blood is done. This process is performed in a continuous way and it is known as CAPD, acronym that in English means Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis.
Another way to perform the Peritoneal Dialysis, known as APD or Automated Peritoneal Dialysis. This therapy works in a similar way to CAPD therefore it is based on the infusion and drainage of the dialysis bath in the abdominal cavity, however instead of the changes being made along the day, these have to be made at night, while the patient sleeps in an automated way, with the help of a device known as Cycler, being the softest method that provides also higher preservation of the residual renal function.
There is not a type of dialysis which is better than the other. However, according to the clinical conditions of each case, there can be preference for one or another method, the one who will decide about the selection of the treatment is the physician, the patient and the family together.
Water is fundamental for the balance of the organism. Restore energies, benefits the appropriate performance of muscles, nerves and intestine, and has beneficial effects for the skin since it hydrates and removes the toxins after cell burning.
Hydration is the main way to protect yourself from the formation of a kidney stone. The more water we drink, the more our blood circulates and gets diluted, smoothing kidney’s when it is time to excrete nutrients function that are not necessary in our organism anymore.
